How can anyone understand the Bible? With many teachers and preachers on TV etc  giving forth teaching that contradicts what another is teaching. How is the average person to know the truth? Just because one may have a Dr. before their name and others have been to seminary etc does not mean they are correct in their teaching. What thy teach may sound good and Bible some hope for circumstances to improve, still does not mean it is Bible truth.  I do not say this to discredit the teacher and preacher, it would be foolish to say we don’t need them, and can’t benefit from their work. I have had the privilege of hearing and learning from many. I just want to emphasize that every Believer has access to the greatest and perfect teacher of all the Holy Spirit through prayer. We each should, must compare and search the scriptures comparing verse to verse and taking them in context to confirm what is being taught is truth.  We as did the psalmist prayed to give him understanding and insight and deliverance even from errors. When get insights as we study we give praise to God as He teaches us, then we share with others what He has taught us. The prerequisites for getting insights from the Word are our commitment to the Word itself. That is we hold it as the very word from God and truth in every area. It says what it means. We must delight in the Word our love and trust in it as if God was actually talking to us personal by voice. That’s why we rely on word for word translations and not just a thought translated as one sees it. As we gain insights we get life, we praise God and we get help in daily living. We are restored by the Word when we sin, fall and wander. He seeks us and restores into fellowship, we remember His goodness, kindness, mercy and love for us. Just my thoughts as I read and think on the passages given at the time. Psalm 119:169-176 169 Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word. 170 Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word. 171 My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes. 172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness. 173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts. 174 I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my delight. 175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me. 176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Reactions in Life

There are times I life when each of us mostly likely will be unjustly treated, because of our beliefs. At these times the question we face is how will we react? The psalmist gives us instructions on how we need to react. We need to focus on the Word of God in the good times so that when the hard times come we will turn to it. He says he stands in awe /wonder of the Word, this comes by study and learning the Word, the more we study the more amazed we become as we learn more of the character of our God. The Word brings joy as that of one finding something extremely valuable. When one loves the Word one will also hate lying and other things that go against the Word of God. His love for the Word causes him to give praise to God throughout the day, that comes from a close walk with God daily moment by moment. It’s our knowing and then relying on the Word that will bring us peace. Our reaction should be as the psalmist , our only hope for salvation is from Christ alone. The hope is the complete assurance based on the promises and character of God, and our personal acceptance of His payment for our sins. He says he has done Gods commands, the only commands for receiving salvation is that we repent of our sinful condition and receive His payment as a gift. “161 Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word. 162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. 163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love. 164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. 165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. 166 Lord, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments. 167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly. 168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.” Psalm 119:61-168

The Psalmist says he remembers, he does not forget God’s Word. To remember we must first learn and know it so that it is planted within our minds ready to come forth at the right time. Remember the Word gives strength for living, comfort when in hard times and motivates to action and restores when needed. We need to hold to and lean upon His promises for wisdom an in times of troubles and victories. Remember the Lord Himself for His rewards, lovingkindness and His righteous judgments. When we see the unsaved, their life styles, beliefs and actions .We must also remember their end , destination for eternity. We believers are as the watchman spoken of in Ezekiel chapter 33. We are commanded to warn the people so they can repent and be saved. But if we as the watchman knowing the coming judgment don’t warn, tell of it’s coming they will perish. But we will be responsible and will give account of our inaction. If we warn, present the true Gospel to others we have done the job given us by our Lord Jesus Christ and we will be rewarded. It’s our responsibility to present the message it’s their responsibility to receive it or pay the consequences of their rejection.  “153 Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law. 154 Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word. 155 Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes. 156 Great are thy tender mercies, O Lord: quicken me according to thy judgments. 157 Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies. 158 I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word. 159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O Lord, according to thy lovingkindness.160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.” Psalm 119:153-160   Ezekiel 33:7-9  “So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

As we go through life we learn the reality that all of life is not roses. We all face problems some different from others, if you don’t have any today just wait tomorrow is coming, don’t be discouraged just be prepared. The psalmist here talks about the times of burdens, the causes and the cure. He says he pleaded for God to hear and save/help him. There are times in life we feel we can’t get His attention, as with the psalmist we make commitments, if you hear and help me I will do a certain thing. Life is full of circumstances etc that cause burdens. Enemies of God and us, discouragement, health problems, hurts from people and Satan’s attacks. Bur there is a cure, that’s really good news when we are facing health and other problems. The cure is turn to God’s Word, mediate on His character, mercy, lobingkindnesss and judgments we know will be right. As we spend time in His Word reading, studying and mediating on what we learn about Him, our trust builds stronger. We rely on Him to help solve the problem or meet the need. We declare with the Psalmist all of God’s Word is true and they will never change. His promises are sure and secure. As we build our fellowship with Chris through times in the Bible and prayer we gain strength to bear them till God removes them. “145 I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord: I will keep thy statutes. 146 I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies. 147 I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word. 148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word. 149 Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O Lord, quicken me according to thy judgment.  150 They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law. 151 Thou art near, O Lord; and all thy commandments are truth. 152 Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever. ”              Psalm 119:145-152

The plumb line is used in construction to show a wall is vertically straight. We examine our lives by the plumb line given in the Word of God. Our goal as a Christian is to be as much like Jesus as possible in daily living. His character is righteous his judgments and words are faithful. He and His words can be trusted. The psalmist says he is consumed by his enthusiasm for the word when he sees the lost ignore God, His Word and His standards. He has a real dedicated love for the Word of God, remember in our own lives our actions demonstrate our love, not just our words. The question we must ask and answer for ourselves is do we cleave to the Word? Our hope comfort in troubles and anguish is in the Word. The psalmist ask for understanding and that can only come as we study and look to God to give us the needed understanding we need.“137 Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments. 138 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful. 139 My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words. 140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it. 141 I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts. 142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth. 143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights. 144 The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.” Psalm 119:137-144

The Word of God/Bible is wonderful, in it’s revelation, commands and promises. The revelation reveals to us a God who loves us, is holy, just and merciful. The commands are given for our protection. The promises gives hope for daily living and the eternal future. To get its’ benefits we must study to know it. It’s through the Word we get correct understanding and directions. Note it says to the simple, one doesn’t have to be highly educated to get revelation and understanding and guidance from the Bible, we just need to read and study it and rely on the Holy Spirit to teach us. Am not discounting the benefits we gain from preachers and teachers, most have studied greatly to get the knowledge they have. But it must also be personal for our own growth. There will be times the Holy Spirit warns us of incorrect teaching thought we may not be able to explain it at the time .I say this carefully just because one is educated with degrees will not always make them correct on everything we each must rely on the inner voice of the Holy Spirit.   A mark/evidence of one’s relationship to Christ is a desire for His Word because of our love for Him. It’s from the Word we are given life, it begins with the Gospel when we accept it as truth., then it gives us light and understanding for living to please God., it guides us and gives us and protects as we are tempted. It’s from the Word we get real concern, burden for the loss around us as we understand their end.   “129 Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. 131 I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments. 132 Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name. 133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. 134 Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts. 135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes. 136 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.” Psalm 119:129-136

In life there are many things that can oppress, persecute and weigh one down. Some people are oppressors, the way they act toward and with others to keep themselves on top in their own eyes. At times our own conscience can oppress us because of past events and actions. And at times events, circumstances of life can be oppressive. And weigh one down to thinking what’s the use of going on with life. We just recently saw in the news where an actor came to that point, and sadly ended his life. The Psalmist is looking to God for help and hope, we need to do the same. He ask God to  “be surety” that is co-sign for him, to do for me what I can’t do myself. The co-signer says that if a person/friend doesn’t or can.t pay the bill I will do it myself. The Psalmist ask God : to deal with him with mercy, God is merciful desires to show mercy (Romans 11:32) , to give him understanding that he may know the Word of God. He ask God to intervene now and not wait . He declares his love for the Word of God it has top priority in his life. He hate every false way that leads men away from God’s way in life and eternity. The answer to all, never give up when life is oppressing us like a tyrant but look to God’s Word and draw close to Him for help and hope.  “121 I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors. 122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me. 123 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness. 124 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes. 125 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies. 126 It is time for thee, Lord, to work: for they have made void thy law. 127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold 128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way. “ Psalm 119:121-128
