Prepare to meet thy God, is the sobering statement from Amos 4:12. In the past years it was put on signs beside the roads to get people’s attention and as a warning. Christmas was God’s gift to us, to prepare us for that future meeting. The gift was announced by an angel saying  “ ..fear not for behold. I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. “ Luke 2:10-11. This was followed by a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men. Now that would really get attention to the message of the gift God was sending to all people. Today we don’t have the angels announcing the gift of God but we do have the written history of the events, like all past history we can’t be there to witness the event personally. We can be assured of the truth of the events by the evidence available.  We have God’s written message in the Bible, the Holy Spirits witness in our hearts. The witness of many churches and Christians proclaiming the historical message and the proof of changed lives. The message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, He paid the penalty for our sins and offers to all the  gift offer of forgiveness and eternal life  to all.  “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

Room at the Cross

The cross upon which Jesus died, Is a shelter in which we can hide, And it’s grace so free is sufficient for me, And deep is it’s fountain as wide as the sea.

Tho millions have found him a friend, And have turned from the sins they have sinned, The Savior still waits to open the gates, And welcome a sinner before it’s too late.

The hand of my Savior is strong, And the love of my Savior is long, Through sunshine or rain, though loss or in gain, The blood flows from Calvary to cleanse every stain.

There’s room at the cross for you, There’s room at the cross for you, Tho millions have come, There’s still room for one Yes, there’s room at the cross for you.

Christmas is the beginning of a rescue attempt. We see stories of the coast guard braving violent storms and seas to rescue those in great danger of death. Police, fireman and many others endangering their own lives to rescue someone in trouble. They leave their own comfort and safety to help others. We admire and honor those men and women.

In the stories of rescue we see people loss and injured, in wildernesses trapped in buildings and cars and riding out storms in ragging seas in sinking boats. No one can rescue themselves without help, death is sure. In this true story we see all mankind in need of rescue. Like , we see in rescue some have ignored the warnings and are now in trouble and can’t get out themselves.

Christmas is really the beginning of the story of the greatest rescue mission of all time. We see God the Son leaving heaven with all its splendor so glorious we cannot comprehend it. The creator of all setting aside the worship of the angelic beings, all creation. He will start the mission as a helpless baby boy born in a stable among the sheep, goats and horses. The beginning of the journey toward the horrible scourging and the cross of death at Calvary.

In the beginning in the garden Adam and Eve ignored God’s warning. In our everyday lives we see many danger signs, Danger high voltage etc. Many warnings but some still ignore  the warnings and end up in need of rescue. The brave rescuer, never lets someone’s bad decision that led to the trouble stop their rescue efforts. Look at our condition before God; “ all have sinned  Romans 3:23 none righteous Romans 3:19 “our righteousness is as filthy rags” Isaiah 64:6 “we were enemies of God” Romans 5:9-10 . Yet in love, compassion and mercy He comes to the rescue of all Romans 11:32.

Rescue teams attempt to save all in need, but sadly some perish. Some reject the efforts to be rescued, some perish because they are beyond the limited ability of the rescue teams. But God is unlimited in either His desire or ability to rescue all who are willing.

John 3:16-18   For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Rom 11:32  For God hath concluded  them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

I Tim 2:4-6  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time[1]

2 Thess 2:10  And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved

2 Peter 3:9  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

On that Christmas night the sky is suddenly brightly lit with the glorious angels, who bring the message of God’s redemption a message of love and mercy.

Luke 2:10-11

“—I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior which is Christ the Lord.”

Good Tidings =satisfactory news or message of a report of an event or condition, message not previously know.

Great joy= exceeding joy, never ending joy, abundance of joy.

To all people=not just the shepherds in the fields but to all the people on the earth then and now. Their message of this awesome event, awesome because this baby had no earthly father, He was God in the flesh. The only way the angels message of that night could be good tidings of great joy to all people is that the announced savior would be offered and available to all, and He is.

To get the picture we must consider man’s condition and his relationship to God.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags;…Isaiah 64:6

The heart is deceitful      Jeremiah 17:9

There is none righteous   Romans 3:10

For all have sinned    Romans 3:23

When we were enemies   Romans 5:10

God’s effort to restore mankind.

Heavens declare the glory  Psalm 19:1-2

To seek and to save that which is lost   Luke 19:10

The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men    Titus 2:11

The birth of Jesus we celebrate at Christmas was just the beginning of the journey to rescue man kind. When on earth Jesus taught as recorded in Luke 6:27  But I say unto you which hear. Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you. Bless them that curse you and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Remember that before we became Christians we were enemies of God (Romans 5:10).  His message was demonstrated by His life’s purpose as He traveled the road to the cross of Calvary. His trial , the beatings, scouraging the blood shed and finally His death on the cross. Because of His love and mercy for all mankind. This is the real story of Christmas. Make sure you have embraced the gift of salvation He has offered. Accept the rescue He offers today, while there is time. There’s room at the cross for all.
