The Lord’s Prayer

Mt 6:9-15

Some passages of Scripture become so familiar that we fail to stop and consider them and apply them to our daily lives. I believe this is one of them. It’s posted on walls placed in trinkets. In some circles it’s read and recited without much thought, like a good luck charm.

“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.‍10 kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.‍11 us this day our daily bread.‍12 forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.‍13 lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.”

Our Father which art in heaven,

This speaks of our relationship to God, which only comes through the blood that Jesus shed at Calvary for payment of the penalty of sin. In His unlimited love and mercy it is offered as a gift to all men 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance

John 3:16,”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life

The prerequisites to receive this gift are Faith and repentance Acts 20:21”Testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”.

 Hallowed be thy name.‍

His name is to be honored above all others. As a Christian our life should bring honor to His name as we live our life before others. Nothing we allow in our life should in any way bring dishonor to His name. We should guard and protect our testimony diligently. A little indiscretion, a little crack in the door is all Satan needs to send us down the path of dishonor.

10Thy kingdom come.

A kingdom speaks of a king reigning over his kingdom. Our daily prayer and goal is to allow God to rule in and over my life as I go about the daily task.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.‍

In heaven nothing happens now that is not in keeping with the will of God. That should be our prayer and commitment each day for ourselves. In general His will is that we live committed lives, allowing nothing that would bring Him displeasure. The other part is reaching out to others with the gospel so they can be saved.

11 us this day our daily bread

In America most of us don’t actually have to ask for daily food and shelter. But we must rely on Him to provide us with the material things we need. We ask for good enough health so we have the ability to work and for a job so we can earn a living. We are blessed to live in a country that offers opportunities to all the willing.

12 forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

He has promised to forgive us our sins when we confess them, 1st John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleans us from all unrighteousness.” But we must remember we can’t harbor unforgiveness of others and expect God to forgive us. Matt 6:15 “But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

13 lead us not into temptation,

Knowing that we all have a sin nature that is bent toward wrong we need to pray for God to keep us from getting into places and situations where we could be tempted to do wrong. Keep the fences strong and high.

 but deliver us from evil:

Many fall into sin because of our pride, we think we will not go there, we are strong enough to avoid the next step in the downward path. This is the exact attitude Satan wants us to have. We need to heed the warning given us by God that our adversary is stronger than we are and we must rely upon God to deliver us from sin.

 For thine is the kingdom,

We acknowledge His rightful ownership of all.

and the power,

There is no greater power than the power of God, power over the seen and unseen. Power over any of our situations and circumstances that we find ourselves in.

 and the glory, forever.

No mater what is accomplished, all the glory belongs to God.

Without Him we can do nothing.

Its not I but Christ.

Its certain.

Witnesses in court tell what they know
personally. Christians are only those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their
savior, that is they have repented of their sin and accepted Christ’s payment
by His death on the cross for the penalty of our sin.

Witnesses, tell others what Christ has done
for you. When and how you came to accept the gift of salvation offered to all
by Jesus Christ. You may not remember the actual date, but only the event.

Our daily life gives credibility or
discredits what we profess to believe. By what we say, our attitude and our
actions things we do. Read the book of 1st John in the Bible.

Facebook reveals a lot about what people
believe by what they say/post.

Christians, why not use it to share your
personal testimony? You may never know who you might influence for Christ. We
are commanded to be witnesses for Jesus Christ Acts 1:8.
